Corinth

A major city in the Roman empire located in the Greek Peloponnese. It was located on an isthmus (or thin strip of land) with a port on either side. Due to the dangerous tides and currents, sailors preferred to land at one of the coastal ports, take their ships out of the water and roll them across the isthmus to the other side and then sail on. Corinth has a reputation in some people's minds with lax morals but whether it was worse than any other Greek or Roman city of the time is debatable.
