Ark of the Covenant

A gold covered wooden chest which Exodus reports contained the tablets of the law given to Moses on Mount Sinai. It was carried around with the Tabernacle until the Temple was built by Solomon, after this it was kept in the Holy of Holies within the Temple. At some point, no one knows when, it was taken from the Temple and has given rise to numerous legends concerning its whereabouts.
