Apocalyptic literature

A type of literature very popular in both Judaism and Christianity from the second century BC onwards. Two full apocalyptic texts exist in the Bible – Daniel and Revelation – but many other biblical books have apocalyptic sections like Isaiah 1 or Matthew 24. The Greek word apocalyptic means revelation and apocalyptic literature focuses on revealing hidden secrets (often from heaven) on earth. Sometimes this revelation also entails the future and the end of the world as we know it.
