FOUR YEARS OF STORYTELLING

Open the Book has produced four years of material to enable teams to present weekly Bible stories in primary school assemblies/ acts of Collective Worship.

Year 1 Sample Book

The Year 1 sample book is a free resource for you to order and can be tried out with your team before ordering the Handbook and The Lion Storyteller Bible. It includes important information at the beginning that explains what Open the Book is about, how it operates, our Code of Practice that the team signs up to when registering and presenting the Stories in a primary school, hints and tips for Storytellers, how to use the Handbook, and the full list of Stories that are in the Storybook and the Handbook pages for the first two stories of Year 1. This sample book is the same size as the Handbook and is the only one that can be bought separately.

Handbook 1 and The Lion Storyteller Bible

A first year of Bible Storytelling

Year 1 stories are designed to be used in one academic year giving a chronological overview of the Bible from Creation to Ascension. It should not be done out of sequence although Christmas should be slotted in the last week of the autumn term. All the stories use The Lion Storyteller Bible which is written by Bob Hartman. To deliver Open the Book you need a copy of The Lion Storyteller Bible and  Handbook 1. The Handbook includes scripts to start and finish the stories and extra Direction pages to help you prepare. This includes how many people are needed for each story and some ideas for props and costumes that you can find on our website. Year 1 is aimed at Reception (4-5 year olds) and Key Stage 1 (5-7 year olds) but can be used with older children.

Handbook 2 and Storybook 2

A second year of Bible Storytelling

Year 2 stories are modular, each comprising of five stories clustered around a theme. Some of the stories are from the Lion Storyteller Bible which is written by Bob Hartman and additional stories, by other authors, are provided in the Storybook 2 to complete the series for a year of storytelling. They do not have to be done in contents order but each module should be done as a complete unit. The Handbook includes scripts to start and finish the stories and extra Direction pages to help you prepare. This includes how many people are needed for each story and some ideas for props and costumes that you can find on our website. Year 2 is aimed at Reception (4-5 year olds) and Key Stage 1 (5-7 year olds) but can be used with older children.

A third year of Bible Storytelling

Christian Values Sample Book

The Christian Values sample book is a free resource for you to order and can be tried out with your team before ordering the Christian Values Handbook and Storybook packs. It includes important information at the beginning that explains what’s different about Christian Values as well as revised introduction pages that are not in the other packs, the full list of Stories that are in the Storybook and both the Handbook and Storybook pages for the value Endurance. This sample book is the same size as the new Storybook in size and follows the same Handbook format. The Handbook pages are printed the same size as all the Handbooks.

Christian Values: A biblical approach

Handbook and Storybook

Christian Values is another year of Bible storytelling which can be done in any order (keeping the Old and New Testament stories together) or in co-operation with the school’s order of values. They can also be added into a year where you may be doing stories from Handbooks 2 or 3. Christian Values is aimed at Key Stage 2 (7-11 year olds) but can be used with younger children. The content is written to include all the children.
