Rule of Life: The Spirit (10 January)

Morning Encounter:

People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things. If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace. Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God’s laws. If we follow our desires, we cannot please God. You are no longer ruled by your desires, but by God’s Spirit, who lives in you.

(Romans 8.5-9)

For Paul, the author of Romans, to live in our own power or the power of the Spirit is literally the difference between death and life. We don’t need to rely on our own resources or strength – we are now able to live in the power and presence of Christ, through the Holy Spirit. Christ dwelling in us through his Spirit sets us free from old habits and sinful patterns. Transformation begins when we are willing to allow the Holy Spirit to flow through us.

Ask God to fill you again with the Holy Spirit and aim today to live with openness to the Spirit flowing through you and working in every situation.

Midday Meditation:

‘Spirit of God, Lord and Giver of Life, moving between us and around, like wind or water or fire; breathe into us your freshness that we may awake; cleanse our vision that we may see you more clearly; kindle our senses that we may feel you more sharply; and give us courage to live as you would have us live, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen’ (John V. Taylor A Matter of Life and Death)

Evening Reflection:

Holy Spirit, living breath of God, breathe new life into my willing soul.

Let the presence of the risen Lord, come renew my heart and make me whole.

Cause Your Word to come alive in me; give me faith for what I cannot see,

Give me passion for Your purity; Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

(Keith Getty / Stuart Townend) the presence of the risen Lord
