Lord, open my ears to hear what you have to say to me; open my heart to love your word, and open my mind to understand your truth.

Daily reflection: Acts 18

In Acts 18, Paul preaches in the synagogue in Corinth and is met with opposition, but receives a dream from God telling him not to be afraid or silent. God’s encouragement to Paul is that there are many other believers in the city of Corinth to aid him. To each of us, as well, it’s an encouragement to have the support and friendship of other believers. This can encourage us when we feel disheartened. Two friends mentioned are Priscilla and Aquila, a married couple Paul met in Corinth. They were also mentioned in the letter to the Romans, credited as strengthening and supporting the early church there. They would reason with and teach new believers (such as Apollos, in Acts) to help them grow as Christians. They accommodated Paul and helped him found the church in Corinth, using their home as a meeting place.

Having companions like that probably strengthened Paul’s determination in ministry. We can often overlook the importance of supporting roles in the church such as hosting, welcoming or connecting with new members. Many people can find it challenging to be hospitable and allow others into their homes. However, supporting and serving others creates a community in the church, which allows us to hold each other up even through difficulties.

Pray

Pray

Dear God, please give me a willingness to open myself up to others at my church, particularly those who are new Christians or new to church, so that I can encourage others and build up the body of Christ. Please help me to connect with those who will support me when I need it as well.
