Keep your promises: Ecclesiastes 5.1–7 (Day 108)

Our daily reflections follow the M'Cheyne Bible reading plan, designed for those who want to read the whole Bible in one year. Each reflection focuses on one of the chapters from that day's readings. Darllenwch rhain yn Gymraeg.

Lord, prepare me to receive your word. Clear my mind and warm my heart. Assure me of your loving purposes for me, and speak into my life today.

Daily Reflection: Ecclesiastes 5

Ecclesiastes 5 goes in a different direction from the previous chapters. It talks about taking seriously what we promise to do for God. Its main message is when you make a vow to God, 'do not delay to fulfil it' (verse 4). This passage may seem out of place, but Ecclesiastes so far has been discussing the futility of living without a relationship with God, and emphasises that only God can give true fulfilment. If God is the one who ultimately gives meaning to our lives, then using our lives to honour God is most meaningful, and part of that is keeping our promises to him.

There are many examples in the Bible of this. Hannah vowed that she would raise her child for the Lord if he would allow her to have one (1 Samuel 1.10–11) and Jonah made a promise after he had been swallowed by the fish (Jonah 2.9). We make vows in many circumstances – during the marriage ceremony most couples vow before God, and as a witness in court we make oaths before God. You may have also made private promises to God during your spiritual journey.

Of course, it’s important to remember that as this is an Old Testament book, the concept of God’s grace may not have been understood by the author as we understand it. God’s grace, shown through Jesus’ sacrifice, covers us when we make mistakes and God is the one who knows our hearts and intentions.

Lord, please help me to keep my promises to you and honour you in all I do.
