A prayer for help: Psalm 86 (Day 276)

Lord, open my ears to hear what you have to say to me; open my heart to love your word, and open my mind to understand your truth.

Daily reflection: Psalm 86

This is an individual lament, ascribed to David. In it, David seems to be in a desperate situation where he fears for his life. Despite this, rather than dwelling on his own danger, David spends most of the psalm meditating on God’s divine nature and renewing his own commitment to God. David’s confidence in God shines through. He knows that God will come to his rescue, not because of self-pride (he describes himself as helpless and weak to begin with) but precisely because he knows God’s nature and how he keeps his promises.

The key to God’s nature is in verse 15. This is perhaps the closest thing to a description of God's character that we find in the Bible.

‘But you, O Lord, are a merciful and loving God, always patient, always kind and faithful.’

There are variations of this statement found elsewhere in the Old Testament (Exodus 34.6, Numbers 14.18, Nehemiah 9.17, Psalm 103.8, Jonah 4.2). The Hebrew word ‘hesed’ that’s used here is often translated as ‘steadfast love’. It is a word closely tied to the covenant relationship God makes with Israel, which God himself promised to fulfil (Genesis 15) regardless of the faithfulness of Abram and his descendants. Mercy is central to who God is.

David knows this and so he is not afraid to approach God and ask for his help even when he himself is weak and far from innocent. It’s a great encouragement for us all.

Pray

Pray

Heavenly Father, I want to love you with all that I am, just like David, regardless of my failings. Thank you for your merciful and steadfast love. Amen
