How to choose a book for Bible Book Club

Starting Bible Book Club but don’t know where to begin? Here are some ideas…

1. Start with the short books

There are at least 21 books that can be read in less than 15 minutes – and they’re often overlooked. Try: Ruth; Joel; Obadiah; Jonah; Nahum; Habakkuk; Zephaniah; Haggai; Malachi; Philippians; Colossians; 1 and 2 Thessalonians; 2 Timothy; Titus; Philemon; 2 Peter; 2 and 3 John; Jude

2. Read the nation’s favourites

John, Psalms, Luke, Ruth, and Romans came out tops on our recent reader survey. Why not begin with those?

3. Why not tackle to the books you’d usually shy away from?

Our research showed people find Leviticus, Numbers, Revelation, Song of Songs and Lamentations tricky. See if a fresh reading and our handy guides help you discover what they have to offer you.

4. Always read the New Testament? Try something from the Old.

For great stories go to Judges, Esther or Ruth. The prophets will give you an to God’s heart for justice and for his people. And the New Testament will make much more sense afterwards.

5. Want to discover the poetry of the Bible?

Try Psalms, Proverbs or Ecclesiastes. You’ll find beautiful metaphors and powerful imagery in Job and the prophets.

6. Revisit Sunday School stories

Discover the bits your Sunday School teacher missed out in Genesis, Exodus and Judges.

7. Tackle some collections

Why not read all the Gospels and see the different ways they highlight Jesus’ time on earth? Or take on the Pauline letters (Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Titus and Philemon), looking out for the different messages for different contexts? Or you could read wisdom literature to see how Job, Ecclesiastes and Proverbs help make sense of each other.

These are just a few ideas – once you get started you’ll probably find it easy to see where you want to go next.
