Made for eternity: 8 Bible verses about hope

Someone has said that it’s possible to live for 40 days without food, three days without water and eight minutes without air – but only one second without hope.

It might be an exaggeration, but it says something profound about the way human beings are designed. We aren’t just machines who produce and consume food and goods. We are made for something more, because we were created in the image of God. That’s why deliberately removing hope from someone’s life – through abusing or enslaving them, for example – is such a terrible sin. It offends God, because it’s an attempt to close down someone’s future – and God promises a bright and glorious future to those who trust in him.

Here are eight Bible verses about hope.

  1. The needy will not always be neglected; the hope of the poor will not be crushed forever (Psalm 9.18).
  2. The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope (Psalm 34.18).
  3. I will always put my hope in you; I will praise you more and more (Psalm 71.14).
  4. The hopes of good people lead to joy, but wicked people can look forward to nothing (Proverbs 10.28).
  5. I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for (Jeremiah 29.11).
  6. For it was by hope that we were saved; but if we see what we hope for, then it is not really hope. For who of us hopes for something we see? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience (Romans 8.24-25).
  7. If our hope in Christ is good for this life only and no more, then we deserve more pity than anyone else in all the world (1 Corinthians 15.19).
  8. Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because we can trust God to keep his promise (Hebrews 10.23).
