Daily reflection: 2 Kings 1

1 and 2 Kings were originally one book, so 2 Kings picks up where 1 Kings concluded. In chapter 1 we encounter five men: Ahaziah the king, Elijah the prophet and three army captains. The last lines of 1 Kings tell us all we need to know about Ahaziah: 'He did evil in the eyes of the LORD' (1 King 22.52). In the book of Kings there are three criteria for a good king: first, the worship of the God of Israel alone; second, ridding Israel of idolatry; and third, being faithful to the covenant. Ahaziah fails on all counts and here we see God’s judgement.

In a sense chapter 1 presents the overall message of 1 and 2 Kings in microcosm: an evil king who has turned away from God to idols and a prophet speaking on God’s behalf calling out idolatry and injustice. Two of the army captains lead their men to their deaths by failing to recognise who Elijah really was. The third captain learns the lesson and goes on his knees in humility. But it’s Ahaziah’s question that sticks: 'What kind of man was it who came to meet you?' The king had sought insight from idols, but he immediately recognises Elijah when he is described by his messengers.

Our actions tell us who we are. What kind of person will you be today?

Pray

Pray

Gracious God, may my actions tell the story of your grace and faithfulness today. Help me to hear your words and follow your truth.
