A double portion: 2 Kings 2 (Day 294)

Lord, open my ears to hear what you have to say to me; open my heart to love your word, and open my mind to understand your truth.

Daily reflection: 2 Kings 2

At the end of Elijah’s ministry we witness the deep bond between servant and master: 'I will not leave you.' Elisha asks for 'a double portion of his spirit' (verse 9). What does he mean? Deuteronomy 21.17 explains that the firstborn son should inherit a double portion of the father’s inheritance. This helps us understand the meaning of Elisha’s request. He was asking to be Elijah’s successor or heir, the one who would carry on the work of the prophet.

What will your legacy be? We all leave a number of legacies. The most obvious is material, but we also leave relational and spiritual legacies. What will your spiritual legacy be? What did you receive and what will you pass on? Perhaps you are harvesting what someone else planted or planting what others will harvest in the future? Each of us plays a part in God’s unfolding story of grace, but we don’t always get to see the fruits of our labour. Think of those who helped you grow spiritually in the past and give thanks for the role they played in your life. Be encouraged and be faithful – you may never know the significance of what you do today!

Pray

Pray

God thank you for those who sowed faithfully in the past and left a spiritual legacy that still blesses us today. Give me opportunities to build on the foundations they laid.
