My husband and I split our time between South Africa and the UK

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My husband and I split our time between South Africa and the UK. We are involved in discipleship and leadership training. I was a bit discombobulated about having to come back from South Africa. I have had a real washing machine of emotions about it.

‘There, there are military and police on the streets. I didn’t leave the flat for three weeks. In some ways you were much safer there, because the lockdown was so severe. I don’t feel as safe here, because some people don’t seem to take it very seriously. But, I had to come back as I have cancer surgery planned for May.

‘I was reading, in Luke, the story of how Jesus raised the widow’s son, which was stunning, kind, tender and miraculous. In Luke 7.16, it says how people reacted. “’A great prophet has appeared. God has come to help his people.’”

‘That’s the whole story of Christmas and Easter, isn’t it? He’s come to help us. That’s stunning. That’s the most amazing thing. That’s helping me now, because he still does. It’s not an historical happening, over and done. I feel that it’s a now thing. He’s still helping us now. I feel that he’s with me now.

‘If you depend on your circumstances for your peace, then perhaps you will stay in the washing machine of emotions. But, I think Jesus is far more radical than we think, and that’s helping me now.’
