12/5/15: Urgent news from Nepal

On Tuesday Nepal suffered a second powerful earthquake. It caused widespread damage to homes and buildings, many temporary shelters are now isolated and communication channels are down. The death toll is rising.
An early start to the monsoon season is tampering with relief efforts. But funds from Bible Society have arrived and some emergency kits have already been put together and distributed, along with the provision of household supplies. Hundreds of Bibles and Scripture portions are also being given out.
Please give generously so that our team will have the resources they need to get aid to the people of Nepal.
Bible Society’s role is crucial in reaching the unreachable.
‘Following the first earthquake, many International Agencies on the ground are bringing emergency relief to Kathmandu and the worst affected locations. However, smaller remote communities remain out of reach. Our response is one of solidarity and compassion. The initial quake hit with such impact, it is impossible to bring help to all affected. However, we aim to supplement and help where we can. Through a big network of churches throughout cities, towns and villages, we aim to reach those unattainable by emergency relief.’
Arun Sok Nhep, United Bible Societies spokesman for South East Asia
Through our church networks we are giving essential aid to those living in the worst-affected areas.
We have pledged to raise £20,000 to go directly to our team in Nepal, to:
- Provide food, blankets, mosquito nets, medicine and household supplies to people whose homes have been reduced to rubble.
- Replace Bibles that have been lost or damaged.
- Offer Scripture booklets dealing with trauma and loss.
- Repair Bible House in Kathmandu and eventually replace damaged furniture and computers.
The monsoon season is fast approaching. The earthquake destroyed sewers and pipes leaving water supplies contaminated. Whole communities are homeless and in desperate need of basic supplies.
They need your help.
Tej Jirel, who leads our work in Nepal, said, ‘We are grateful to many friends who are praying for us. The immediate need at the moment is food and household supplies, and we can play a role in channelling relief aid to churches using our networks.’
Our team on the ground urgently need funds to ensure the immediate necessities of the people are met. So please make a donation.
Please pray for our staff as they offer help, especially as many of them still do not know the fate of their wider families living in rural villages.
