Urgent prayer

Revd Courtney Stewart, head of the Bible Society of the West IndiesJamaica: urgent prayer call as violence rages in Kingston

Bible Society is asking for urgent prayer for Jamaica as intense gun battles spread to new areas of the capital, Kingston.

City residents, including the wife and family of Bible Society General Secretary, Revd Courtney Stewart, have been penned in their homes as battles between police and gang members raged in the street.

Speaking in England, where he is launching the Jamaican Patois New Testament, Courtney said, ‘My wife and four girls have been sleeping on the floor at night to avoid stray bullets. It is a very frightening time for people, who are unable to go to work or school.

‘We cannot appeal urgently enough to all our friends for their prayer support at this time of emergency. Only God can make a difference now.

‘Please pray that calm will be restored and direction given to the leaders of our country to bring a resolution to this situation. Please also pray for the thousands of Kingston residents families, including many Bible Society staff, who are living through this.’
