The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has been named as a Vice- President of Bible Society.
Archbishop Sentamu will serve alongside Bible Society’s president the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Richard Chartres the Bishop of London and five other vice-presidents who hold this honorary role.
Commenting on the appointment, Bible Society’s Group Chief Executive James Catford said, “I’m delighted that John Sentamu has accepted our Board's invitation to become a Vice-President of Bible Society. He stands in a line of distinguished national figures that date back to William Wilberforce who also held this position.
“Recently, he told me how he had given away his Bible to a stranger he met on an aeroplane.
“This appointment is a huge encouragement to us and we look forward to supporting Bishop John in re-engaging the Bible in public life.”
Archbishop Sentamu joins the Most Revd Vincent Nichols the Archbishop of Westminster, Archbishop of Wales Most Revd Dr Barry Morgan, Professor David Ford, Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, The International Director for Micah Challenge Revd Joel Edwards and Lord Alton of Liverpool who already serve as Vice-Presidents to Bible Society.
