Demand for Patois Bible High

8 July 2010

Demand for Patois Bible High

Hundreds of people have started listening to the newly-launched  Gospel of Luke in Jamaican Patois, since its UK launch in May.

In just one month, nearly 250 people have downloaded the newly-available resource as an MP3 file from Bible Society.

Jamaican Patois is spoken by 5 million people in Jamaica and around the world.

Revd Courtney Stewart, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of the West Indies, said, ‘Jamaican Patois has always been regarded as the language to communicate music and folklore, but it’s never been used to translate anything serious. So this is of great significance. It’s history in the making.’

The New Testament in Patois will be published in August 2012, as part of Jamaica’s 50th year of independence.
