BitemyBible.com
Bitemybible.com is a blog that looks at how the Bible is portrayed on the British media scene - the good, the bad and the ugly.
Media
The print and broadcast media is one of the most invasive and influential aspects of daily life. That’s why we put a great emphasis on helping to shape the way the Bible is conveyed in this arena.
This matters particularly because:
- The Bible is one of the media’s most talked-subjects – from online comment pieces to the pages of glossy magazines.
- How the Bible is covered by the media shapes how British people both see and engage with it.
However, in the rush to file a story, a journalist can sometimes misunderstand Scripture – or lose sight of the big picture. So Bible Society works hard to be part of these conversations, rather than a spectator on the sidelines.
Bible among the headlines
The Bible is mentioned in the national press around 3,000 times a year.
- Across the national daily newspapers, the Bible is most mentioned within the context of arts and entertainment.
- Out of all the national daily newspapers, The Guardian mentions the Bible most often, followed by The Times and The Independent.
- Around three quarters of articles mentioning the Bible are opinion pieces.
Our work includes:
- The Bible Style Guide, a 70-page reference guide for journalists and broadcasters.
- Bible ‘hot topic’ guides, taking journalists through the background to controversial biblical issues.
- Supporting Christians in the media industry, who are often the ones already talking about the Bible.
- Helping other journalists and broadcasters to talk positively about the Bible.
- BitemyBible, a blog on biblical issues in the media.
- Providing information and advice on the Bible for those filing stories or producing media content.
Helping journalists get it right
To help journalists and broadcasters deal accurately with the Bible and related issues Bible Society has created a free 70-page Bible Style Guide. Its subjects cover the Bible’s history, accuracy, and interpretation. It also has an A to Z directory of biblical terms.
James Macintyre, New Statesman journalist, said of the Guide, ‘Informative without being patronising, cliché-busting as well as substantial, the Bible Style Guide is useful for those already in the know – as well as those of us who are hastily having to catch up.’
