Biblos
Biblos is a lively approach to teaching the Bible in today's schools.Developed by the Biblos project, based at the University of Exeter, in collaboration with Bible Society.
Education
Through education the minds of children and young adults are shaped most days of the year. Yet the voice of the Bible in this context is being increasingly lost.
- The general curriculum, from classics to astronomy, literature to language, is littered with biblical references, allusions and ideas.
- Although religious education is compulsory, the quality of its teaching is patchy.
- 63 per cent of students surveyed said the Bible is important but never read it.
- Only 17 per cent of students surveyed say the Bible is exciting.
A classic of literature
A poll of British people revealed that 60 per cent are in favour of teaching the Bible as a literary classic in schools.
This underlines the importance of Bible Society’s work to equip teachers and students with tools to help them understand the Bible and its relevance.
- Cross Ref-it, a free website helping students and teachers of A-level English understand biblical references in literature as they relate to exam texts such as Hamlet and Frankenstein.
- Open the Book, a free programme of themed and dramatised Bible stories, each around 10 minutes long, that fits comfortably into school assembly times
The Bible in English Literature education
‘Teachers and lecturers tell us that basic Bible themes like the fall or redemption are not understood by students today. ‘Cross Ref-it will enable them to gain a basic understanding of the Bible and gives these concepts a greater meaning and resonance.’
