Braille Bibles

Fingers reading a Braille BibleAround the world, more than 300 million people are either blind or not able to see well enough to read.

This is why Bible Society is committed to making the Bible available in Braille.

This gives people the Bible’s life-changing message in a way they can access themselves and also share with others.
However, this task is a huge financial challenge, particularly because Braille Bibles are very expensive to produce.
Braille Bibles are produced on heavy paper so they can be printed on both sides. When it’s complete, the whole Bible fills an average of 50 enormous volumes.
For this reason, many are kept in libraries or in centres for visually-impaired people. This gives a whole community has access.

Person reading a braille BibleAt a mission centre for visually-impaired people in Burkina Faso, 18 year old Odile Ouedraogo moved her fingers slowly and carefully over a page of raised dots. She was reading Mark’s Gospel in Braille and so encountered the Bible for the first time in her own language.

‘I cannot believe it!’ Odile cried. ‘I can read with my fingers in my language. This gives me such strength!’
