Bible Society was established in 1804 by a group of people including William Wilberforce and Thomas Charles to encourage the 'wider circulation and use' of the Scriptures.
We're still working on this mission today.
We believe that the Bible is an extraordinary collection of books, worth reading and part of the solution to today's big issues.
We make Scriptures available where there are none. We help the churches use and teach them. And we try to promote the Bible through the arts, education, media and politics.

Bible Society and you
If you've never read the Bible before, we'd love to help you get started. You can read it for yourself on this site, or you might want to explore some of our work.
If you like the Bible but would like to grow in your understanding, have a look at some of our resources:
- h+ is an introductory training course for making good sense of the Bible;
- Lyfe is a series of sessions and videos connecting the Bible with everyday life;
- the Bible Style Guide provides a crash course in the Bible for busy journalists, broadcasters and bloggers.
If you know the Bible and love it and want to share it with others, we hope you'll consider supporting us.
